Observation Narrative
Grassy opening on north edge of sandstone "shield barren", a Pinus echinata dominated woodland on the upper slopes of a more or less planar slope of a dip-slope sandstone stratum, triangular or chevron shaped in outline, with little cliffs on either edge. Very species rich community for pine-oak vegetation on Pine Mountain. Bedrock surface is somewhat mogul-like, with about 10% exposed rocks.
Plot located 0.75 mi WNW of Skegg Hole.
All trees > 2 cm dbh were supposedly measured, but location of original data unknown.
Measured trees (dbh in cm.): Pinus echinata (25), Acer rubrum (10.8), Quercus stellata (9), Nyssa sylvatica (13).
Substrate varies from bare rock to 2 cm of dark brown duff mixed with white sand over bedrock to 0.4-1 cm of duff over 11 cm of gray sand over bedrock.
